Portal plugs serve the purpose of plugging the incision/portal made by surgeons, so that Ringer's Lactate solution does not squirt out of the patient when an instrument is removed for a period of time, only to be inserted later on in the operation.
During this window where there is no instrument in the patient, plugging the portal serves 3 benefits:
- It keeps the image on the monitor clear and sharp for the surgeons. Spilling Ringers Lactate blurs the visibility significantly inside the patient.
- It reduces the risk of infection. Having an open portal/incision is a gateway for infection. These plugs are sterilized to SABS standards and close the portal.
- It reduces the amount of wasted Ringer’s lactate. By plugging the portal, Ringer’s Lactate doesn’t spill out and go to waste.
